Hi. I'm Koda. I'm actually all that's left of Psychic Trance Fur at the moment, but let me tell you a story
about how the band formed and dissolved and what might happen with it in the future.
Psychic Trance Fur is a collaboration between myself and Darren Weight. I did the guitar work and vocals,
wrote all the lyrics, helped with the synth parts on the songs we co-wrote, and did about half of the Head
album alone. I'm also the music publisher and record label, and did all the album artwork. Darren did most of
the synth parts and all the
percussion programming on our joint productions -- which may not seem like much but it involved countless
hours of effort.
I met Darren in 1992 when he was 19-years-old working as a cook at a local Denny's restaurant here in Salt
Lake City, Utah, USA. I was 38, and used to go to Denny's almost every night to write in a journal at the
counter and be entertained by the drunks coming in after the bars had closed. Darren and I became friends
because he was serious about learning to be an electronic musician and I was studying the subject at the local
university. Back then electronic music had just evolved from analog synthesizers to computer control of
external devices with software, though in the beginning we couldn't afford all that and recorded on a 4-track
cassette machine. Some of the material on this CD was actually recorded that way.
I was always of the opinion that it didn't matter what kind of music one did as long as it was good. That
idea, and the fact that we didn't play live because we couldn't find a drummer willing to play along with a
computer, is why we never
got anywhere. We released our first album on cassette after just nine months under the band name "Huh?". The
album was titled Before the Beginning and it did very well on a local music radio program. But because
the mood of the music changed with every song it wasn't something one would ever be in the mood to listen to,
and because we didn't play live we had no following. If people don't know about your music it won't sell in
record stores (this was before the internet happened) so distributors wouldn't carry it.
We worked our tails off for 7 years creating all kinds of music, but then Darren was offered a great job as a
manager and DJ at a new dance club, and since we weren't getting anywhere it made since for him to do
something in music that enabled him to make a living. So I collected our best spacey sounding electronic
music, added some of my solo work and created the Head CD in 1998. It went nowhere because we still weren't
playing live.
Darren is still a DJ and works on dance music as part of various bands, and we're still great friends. We
occasionally talk about working together again but we are both too busy with other projects. It's possible I
might someday release a solo album under the Psychic Trance Fur name and perhaps even include a few tracks by
Darren if he has anything that will fit. We might even collaborate on a few songs together. But with him
being married with kids and me out promoting my books that doesn't appear to be likely anytime soon.
We hope you enjoy the Head CD. If you listen carefully you may be able see how dedicated we were to doing
great work. For example, "Hike Like a Tree" took us four months of full time effort to record, and if you
count all the subtle tones that swim in and out of that song you might see what perfectionists we tried to
be.
As of early 2012 this CD is still completely unknown. We have sold far less than 100 CDs though I have given
away nearly all of the 1,000 I had made back then. I am hoping that while promoting my books people will
slowly discover my lifetime of effort to be a great musician and songwriter. I don't know how you found this
web page, but you can consider yourself among the few who even know this album exists. I respond to every
email I receive (if it gets through my spam filter - I receive 300-500 junk emails everyday) so free to say hi
if you'd like. And thank you, sincerely, for your interest in our work.
